Capes and Cloaks

Capes and cloaks have existed, in one variety or another, through much of our known human history.  From early Medieval mantles to the fringed ponchos of the sixties.  But since the humble poncho had its hippie revival, the cape in its more sophisticated form has seen nothing of a major comeback on the streets - until now!  The cape is back on the fashion agenda and is one of the major trends for 2010.

This fabulous mohair cape dates from the 1960's and is available from Faux Brit.

Beth says:
This cape is a comfortable and sweet alternative to bulky coats.  Layer with sheer blouses, fun tees, funky knitwear and/or classic turtle-necks.  Experiment with elbow length gloves. Balance the fullness with a narrow skirt, skinny jeans and/or leggings.

Whether it's tailored, sporty or basic, jumpsuits continue to be one of the key trends for 2010

Day: wear your playsuit loose and flowing as shown right.  Take this fabulous playsuit by Betty Barclay - it's the perfect look for spring/summer 2010.  It has a dash of hippy and works well combined with flip-flops or more formally with cute flats.  To achieve a cool daytime look, fabrics should be free-flowing with wide legs.

Here are some tips of how to wear the trend:

* If you have curves or a pear-shaped figure, try for a halter jumpsuit, belted in at the waist.

* For night time opt for luxurious fabrics like silks; details like sequins or sheer panels; or leather for an edgier look.

* If you go for a basic block-colour piece, the options are practically endless. Try a cropped jacket in a contrasting colour, bold statement jewellery, belts or ties, badges, chains, or interesting layers.

* Another way to wear the jumpsuit in 2010 is with an exotic feel: to work this style look for billowing harem-style pants with gathered-in ankles.

Evening: A new take on relaxed glamour.  Whether it's single-shouldered, sequinned or colour-blocked, these are striking alternatives to the traditional evening dress.

This eye-catching, colour-block jumpsuit (right) from Catwalk Creative can be worn during the day with floppy hat, wedge sandals and shades.  In the evening, dress it up with chunky jewels and bangles.  A cutesy cropped jacket or blouse will cover the shoulders and arms, protecting you against sun or sea breeze whilst providing lots of stylish, laid-back glamour!

Sheer Fabric

Yes, sheer fabric is back and one of hottest 2010 fashion trends.  But no need to worry, it's not about tight, see-through tops and dresses as we saw in the Nineties.  Run your eyes over the Spring/Summer 2010 catwalks and you'll find sheer fabrics used in a multitude of ways: tight sheer pieces, layers, and the much sought after delicate, feminine draping.

Elegance really is the key to wearing the sheer fashion trend this year. And while it hit our radar back in 2006, it's now back with a vengeance in 2010!

Louise says:
If you're looking for a delicate, feminine dress, look no further than this example of an early 1970's summer gown.  The sleeves are full and billowing with deep cuffs and fabric covered buttons.  A tie belt cinches in the waist and fastens with a bow, front or back.

Day or evening, this dress requires no additional accessories.  Finish off your romantic look by wearing hair piled-high in masses of curls.
Long split skirts or maxi dresses that give a not-so-subtle hint of leg as one walks along.  For an even greater visual impact, the split will pass the top of the thigh and reach the hip.  There may be a single side split, a centre split, or dual side splits with a panel of fabric that falls along the middle section.

This fresh and funky maxi dress from Catwalk Creative is a super-cute alternative to the sheer fabric trend.  With colours that are bold and vibrant, this dress by Neiman Marcus isn't for the faint-hearted.

If you're young and sassy, this flirty, show-stopping dress will suit you down to the ground; just like the show-stopping side split!

The Female Dandy

Key elements:

* Britishness; particularly Regency era British fashion
* High collars; ruffle and bow blouses
* Cropped slim-cut jackets in both a double or single breast
* Waist coats and tailored vests
* Fob chains
* Frock coats and tail coats
* High-waisted jodhpurs

While androgynous, the 2010 dandy trend is most definitely feminine.  To get this trend right, you need to mix sharp tailoring and masculine clothes.  Make sure you choose cuts that accentuate and flatter the female shape.  A cinched waist is one way of feminising a masculine outfit.  Add a waist-cinching belt or nipped-in jacket to neaten up the overall dandy look.

Wearing brooches is a great way to show off your dandyism!  Find a brooch that's slightly larger than usual and wear it with pride!  Elements of the female dandy trend should always evoke aristocracy and their associated wealth.
There are two rules for wearing the boyfriend blazer:

Make it oversized

The key is to only go up one size; it shouldn't swallow you.  Make the jacket shoulders come no more than an inch and a half away from your own, perfect for accented shoulders.

Roll up the sleeves

This is a crucial element of the boyfriend blazer trend.  Rolling or pushing up the sleeves goes to balance out the look by implying that the sleeves would otherwise be too long for your arms; also exposing the wrists to make the look more feminine.
Boyfriend Blazer

The 'boyfriend' blazer has yet to reach the same levels of popularity as 'boyfriend' jeans or 'boyfriend' shirt.  Both latter trends are now considered 'old hat', and aren't really considered trends any more.  However, the boyfriend blazer has found new sophistication and will be with us throughout 2010.
